First Social Ride Recap
The first social ride of the Fall Semester was a success! We had 14 riders and saw 4 new faces despite the horribly threatening rain. After a nice cruise down the new bike trail system in East Lawrence we circled around the University of Haskell campus and made our way back downtown for some coffee at Wheatfields. We managed to dodge most of the rain and everyone was able to make it home before the thunderstorms began!
KU Cycling Social Ride
The first KU Cycling Social Ride will start from Strong Hall (by the Jayhawk Statue) at 5PM, Friday August 20th!
This will be a slow and easy ride where new recruits can mingle with the KU Cycling members.
Hope to see you there!
Bicycle Safety
The Lawrence bicycling community has recently witnessed multiple accidents involving fellow cyclists, some of which have been fatal. The members of KU Cycling wish to extend our condolences to the victims and their families. It is unfortunate that bicycle safety issues have come to our attention in such a tragic way. As a response to these events and the lack of action taken by the Lawrence city officials and lawmakers/enforcers, we feel that something more must be done to protect cyclists on our local roads as well as educate motorists and the community. We plan to solidify a committee of students from KU Cycling to work with other Lawrence cycling advocates to make our city a safer place for riding bicycles.
Check the website soon for more updates on the committee as it gets underway and as always, please be safe when out on the road!

End of the Season Review
KU Cycling’s 2010 road season has come to an end. We are sad to see such a great season finish, but we are extremely proud of the results and accomplishments we made as a team this year.
The Cycling Jayhawks rode away with several first place finishes (including seven from Sam Weinberg), a Team Time Trial first place finish (in a dominating fashion), a countless number of top ten finishes, and a Collegiate Nationals qualifier (David Neidinger)!
We are also proud of our team and club’s growth this year! Last year, there were only four racers that competed and less than ten club members. This year, we had around ten racers and over twenty club members! We are extremely pleased with the growth of our team and club and are excited about the future of KU Cycling!

12 Hours of Power Recap
The 12 hours of power was a great success last Friday, with team members riding trainers on Wescoe Beach from 6am to 6pm. Around 8:30 am the clouds rolled in, the rain started pouring, and we were forced to move to the overhang. Later in the day, however, the sun came out and we were able to enjoy a great day of raising money and increasing club awareness! The club accepted donations for the World Bicycle Relief Fund and received many donations from kind students and staff on campus. We were also able to use the event to promote our cycling club, and signed up several new and interested students. All in all, it was a fantastic day. Thanks to all who participated, donated, and stopped by!
In addition, the KU TV station made a little video about the 12 hours of power:
KSU Race Weekend
This weekend, the KU Cycling Race Team traveled to Manhattan, KS for this year’s first collegiate race. The weekend started off with a road race on Saturday, which every rider that raced can tell you was absolutely miserable! The wind chill was about 30 degrees, the wind was ferocious, and rain pelted our riders as they battled Mother Nature, as well as the other riders, to make it to the finish line. Luckily, everyone survived and some of our riders even posted some good results! Later that afternoon, the Team Time Trial had to be cancelled due to the miserable weather.
On Sunday, Mother Nature had a change of attitude, and we had beautiful weather for the Criterium Race. The course was a fast, pinched figure eight course with a few technical turns and a straight-away finish directly into the wind. We had a couple of riders go down in crashes, due to the aggressive turns, but they are both just fine!
Overall, it was a fun weekend and our team had a blast! We would also like to give a very special thanks to Amber Markey’s parents, Lyle and Kay Markey, for allowing us to stay in their home on Saturday night!
